Give your brand attention and it will deliver

Be kind to your brand, nurture it and give it the attention it deserves, it will grow. Neglect it, or fail to give it a chance and it will wither before it ever reaches its full potential.

STAY TRUE TO YOUR PATH

A strong brand works. It is a compass that maps out the route to success and keeps you on track. It helps you stay focused, even when the market changes or the temptation to go in every direction is strong.

SO, HOW DO YOU START?

In this blog, I’ll give you a little push to start the process. And above all, I’ll tell you where not to start. It will save you time, money and a lot of frustration.

BUILDING A BRAND IS A STRUCTURED AND CONTINUOUS PROCESS

Think of it as building a house, first, you create a solid foundation. With a brand it is no different. It often starts with an idea, a great product or a valuable service. Then you ask yourself a few simple, but important questions.

  • Who are you serving?
  • What value do you add?
  • Which problens do you solve?
  • Which feelings and image do you want to create?

Don’t forget the money. What investment is realistic? For many companies, investing 5 to 12% of annual revenue in brand strategy, positioning and communication is a realistic guideline.

WHERE DO YOU BEGIN?

  • Start with a strategic foundation.
  • What do you stand for?
  • What are you aiming for?
  • What are your business objectives, your mission and your vision?

Then explore which functional and emotional values you want to connect to your brand. Does your company already exist? Then also research which values and associations others already connect with your brand. This often provides surprising insights.

The next step is determine which position you want to occupy in the minds and hearts of your audience. From this position, you develop your brand identity.

YOUR LOGO IS NOT YOUR BRAND

Without a brandfoundation, a logo is nothing more than a nice picture, a collection of shapes and colours. Your brand is what you stand for. It is the promise you make and the place you want to occupy in the mind and heart of your customer. Do that work first. The logo will follow naturally.

A WEBSITE WITHOUT STRATEGY IS AN EMPTY SHOP WINDOW

Your website is the centre of your brand. Everything comes together there. That is why you should pay attention to the content. Is your story true, does it build confidence and is it relevant for your audience? Does it encourage visitors to take action?

Build your brand first. Your website comes afterwards.

WHAT NAME DO YOU GIVE YOUR BRAND?

Your own name, creative or relevant?

Are you the product and no desire to conduct a long search for a brand name? Then your own name is often a strong and unique choice. Building brand associations happens faster because people immediately connect you with your brand. Remember though that you always represent your brand, everywhere you go. That can sometimes be difficult when you are in a bad moodor utlimately sell in and cash the value you have created. So you might want to consider doing a little extra work for a name that sticks.

WHAT IS A GOOD URL?

A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the internet address of your website. Choose a name that is easy to pronounce and remember. Avoid hyphens, complicated spellings, long names and characters that create confusion, such as a 0 that looks like an O. And have you finally found that perfect name? Then sometimes it turns out that the URL is already taken. So dont forget to check. Also remember that registering a domain name does not automatically mean that you own the brand. Check whether you can register the brand name as well.

A BRAND IS NEVER FINISHED

Once the house is built, you can enjoy it and its value grows. Just don’t forget the maintenance. Give it attention, add a fresh coat of paint from time to time, respond to changes and keep a close eye on the foundation.

Many entrepreneurs see brand development as a finished project.
“It’s there, isn’t it?” But that is not how a strong brand works.

Your brand, together with your people, is one of the most valuable assets of your company. Treat it as the valuable business asset it is.

EXPERIENCE COUNTS

My experience runs well into the triple digits. Successes and mistakes with both consumer and business-to-business brands in high-end luxury, professional services and personal brands are experiences I allow you to benefit from.
